The HEART of The Matter

Updated: Nov 13, 2021

"No matter how bodacious the body, a closed heart will never be attractive" - Odulana Orisanmi

Teaching people about masculine and feminine energy management is such a wild ride. Since the journey of energy management is never done I frequently find myself learning right alongside my students as I teach them. One concept that is fundamental to my teaching is The Head and Heart mix up - the reality that we think with our hearts, and actually feel with our minds. We will save the mind for another post, and focus on the heart for this one.

Very few people truly understand the heart, and how much it is a masterpiece of creation. To think that this center of ourselves physically is also the center of our emotional self is uncanny. Our heart keeps the whole system running, even when the mind may not be functioning. As we know, you can live while brain dead, but you cannot live while “heart dead”. This has always been such a fascinating truth to me, especially when adding the energetics of the heart to the mix. Energetically, our Heart Chakra is undefeated in its majesty. In Sanskrit, “anahata” means unhurt, unstuck and unbeaten. It is the fourth primary chakra and serves as our center of love for oneself and others, compassion, empathy and forgiveness. The anahata chakra is associated with unconditional love, compassion, and joy. It is the source of deep and profound truths that cannot be expressed in words. "Anahata is a bridge between the lower and upper chakras integrating the manifest with the spiritual", says yoga teacher Stephanie Snyder.

Consequently, the energy shifts that take place in the heart run our life. We are so identified with them that we use the words “I” and “me” when we refer to what’s going on in our heart. "But we are not our hearts, we are the experiencers of our hearts" - The Untethered Soul. As such, our hearts can cause us to open up, or close off without our consent. We can love someone/something deeply one second, being fully in trust and security, and then be completely frightened by it the next. What is it about the structure of the heart center that permits it to close like this? One concept I have heard is that It is because our hearts can get blocked by stored unfinished energy patterns from the past. When this occurs it is like a computer needing to clean out the cache- things will still work, but a lot slower, and some things may actually not work until the cache is cleared.

So this might make us wonder, why are we so connected to our heart? What is the point of us having a center of self that can be so easily tripped up or trapped? Further still, what if everything just passed right through you, and did not TOUCH our hearts so much? Personally, I have surrendered to the fact that I may never know the answer to any of these in this lifetime, and as I surrender, a strange knowing often comes over me. Not a knowing of the answers to these questions, but a knowing of why my heart is here- it is here so that I may experience deeply and fully. My heart is here so that I may have an abundant existence in this life cycle that my Soul has chosen. In the Ifa tradition, my Oluwo Chief Awósanmí Ọ̀suntógùn Sékou Alájé teaches us that “happiness requires constant calibration”, meaning that what worked for happiness today, may not work tomorrow. For me, the effort needed to calibrate happiness is directly correlated to the state of my Heart - if I am able to calibrate, then I am in a healthy flow with things, and if I am not it is an indication to seek surrender more deeply.
