Power In Patience

Writer: Cortni GrangeCortni Grange

At the age of 39, I've come to realize that patience has been the single most impactful trait in my life. It's a virtue we all acknowledge, but for me, it's been an invaluable emotional training ground. Patience serves as my personal metaverse, a space where I can explore multiple facets of an emotion, simulating potential actions and reactions based on my present feelings. The more patient I am, the more scenarios I can consider, aiming to align my actions with my principles.

It sort of feels/looks like this...

However, cultivating this patience wasn't easy, especially for someone like me who tends to spiral into thoughts that diverge from reality. I look at spiral thoughts as mental movies we create in our minds that can feel incredibly real and too often end up shaping our decisions and actions. The real harm from these spiral thoughts is that they are merely constructs influenced by our past experiences and, more often than not, truncate the positive possibility of our future as a result. This is where patience comes into play as a practice field. By refraining from making decisions while engulfed in spiral thoughts, we increase the likelihood of making choices based on positive possibilities.

Navigating this process alone can be challenging. Often, we find ourselves either cutting people off impulsively or letting them in too deeply based solely on our decisions made as the result of spiral thoughts. We believe these feelings guide us in the 'right' direction, but in reality, they're influenced by our distorted memories and unresolved traumas. Over time, these distortions manifest as triggers, hindering our ability to reason intuitively.

In truth, both our gut instincts and intuition require fine-tuning, much like radio stations, to truly grasp their messages. Allowing spiral thoughts and traumatic triggers to direct our mental movies leads to costly consequences for our choices.

If you're struggling with spiral thoughts, triggers, or overcoming past traumas, I'm here to lend an understanding ear and offer support. Let's talk.
